The Status

5/1/2023 - More to come… plans are currently underway to #SendMartha to Washington, D.C. Plans will be announced as soon as final approval is granted and a date has been chosen for installation.

9/14/2020 - The statue of Martha Hughes Cannon was unveiled in the Utah State Capitol and installed in her temporary home. The Covid-19 pandemic stalled plans to install her in Washington, D.C., but guests can visit her at the Utah State Capitol until plans can be made to move her to D.C.

5/13/2020 - Several committee members and donors had the opportunity to visit Baer Bronze with artist Ben Hammond to watch several sections of the final sculpture get poured. Currently, the sculpture of Dr. Cannon is 18 separate castings and ready to be assembled. Remember to follow @benhammonfineart to watch the process unfold.

5/1/2020 - Like people everywhere, our project and timelines will be altered by the COVID-19 situation. Currently the committee is working with the artist to keep Martha on schedule. We are also working with the Architect of the Capitol to keep the project moving forward and are expecting installation late this year. Check back regularly for the most up to date information on the statue of Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon.

2/17/2020 - Committee members visited Ben Hammond’s studio in order to approve the full sized clay model of Martha. We video-conferenced in committee members in order to have a quorum and the statue was unanimously approved.

1/29/2020 - Yesterday, the Martha Hughes Cannon Statue Oversight Committee was thrilled to unveil the first bronze casting, a 25-inch scale model, of the statue of Dr. Martha Hughes Cannon. The committee, joined by members of the Cannon family as well as members of the Artist Selection Committee, was able to unveil the model on the floor of the Utah House of Representatives and the floor of the Utah Senate.

The event marked the first time the sculpture had been seen in bronze. The model will be on display at the Utah State Capitol for the remainder of the Legislative Session. For information on how to visit the sculpture visit: https://utahstatecapitol.utah.gov/
